The ideal way to celebrate valentines day, whether you are single or in a relationship, is with a classic red lip. Red lipstick application can be tricky. A lot of the time you can get colour that bleeds or fades way too quickly. In this article I’m going to show you the proper way to apply red lipstick. These are my step by step instructions to feel dramatic, sexy, and confident this v-day with your flawless red lip. This makeup look suits everyone no matter your hair colour, skin tone or personality. Let’s get started!
Always start with a great base. Make sure your lips are exfoliated and moisturized for a lip colour that has longevity. Use a lip scrub and gently purse your lips together to fluff away dry chapped lips. No lip scrub no problem. Do it yourself with sugar and honey, olive oil or coconut oil. Don’t be too vigorous rubbing your lips because lip skin is thin and sensitive. Follow up with rinsing your lips with a warm washcloth. Next pat your lips dry or give the product a few minutes to completely absorb into your lips before continuing.
Now we need a nice even base to prime your lips. Use whatever product is remaining on your foundation brush and apply foundation evenly to your lips to create color consistency. As an alternative use M.A.C. prep and prime lip. Clear and hydrating, this product provides an excellent foundation. Do not substitute either of these products with a lip gloss as it will alter the colour of your lipstick.
Now we are ready to outline. For a solid colour select a lip liner that is closest in shade to your lipstick. Precision is key so take your time with this step. Start at your Cupid’s bow work your way out. Use equal pressure and line each lip with one fluid motion. Plainly, do not lift the pencil until you have reached the outer corner. This will ensure that you have a smooth outline. When you are done outlining both lips fill it all in still using your pencil liner. This will vastly extend the wear of your lip colour. Next, apply your desired lipstick with a lip brush. Again start in the middle and work your way out. Use feather like strokes to get every nook and cranny getting right into any fine lines. A magnifying mirror is super helpful to help you achieve that ideal shape.
To seal your colour, put a Kleenex tissue over your lips and brush translucent powder over the Kleenex for the best longevity. Use a lip brush and correct any edges that aren’t perfect with concealer. Want the edges on the inside of your mouth to be perfect as well? Try closing your lips around a q-tip and pulling the q-tip directly out. This makes for the perfect edge on the inside of your lips. For lips that are food, drink and kiss proof I always seal it with the Lipcote transparent lipstick sealer. Use the tiny application brush all over your lips and concentrate around the edges. This clear waterproof sealer will lock in your lip colour to ensure it lasts all day long!
It doesn’t matter if you are single or ready to mingle these red lip tips will help you achieve a flawless application every time.
