We all begin each year with the best of intentions. Instead of a new year’s resolution have you ever thought of making a beauty resolution? These are some cardinal beauty sins and the reasons why we should all resolve to stop committing them.
Sleeping With Your Makeup On – Everyone, at some point in time, has come home after a late night out and passed out with their makeup still on. Blame it on laziness or tiredness but we are all a victim of this cardinal sin. You’ve probably asked yourself, is it really that bad? The short answer is yes it is! Not washing your makeup off before bed can clog your pores. Essentially this means your skin can’t breath. Suffocated skin can put you at a higher risk of acne. It also creates a high exposure to free radicals which breaks down collagen. This leaves your skin with less elasticity which can cause skin sagging, lines, and wrinkles. No girl wants that. Also when you rub your eyes against your pillow or in your sleep the mascara causes breakage to your natural lashes and can result in eye infection or even a small bump or stye.
Box Coloring My Hair – Why oh why do we ever think this is a good idea. Step away from the cosmetics counter slowly and put down the box of L’Oréal. Box dying your hair never turns out the way it’s supposed to. Either blond hair turns green or you get hot roots. The reason that we all epically fail at color matching is because color is chemistry. It takes some hairstylists years to learn proper color formulation through education. Trying to color your own hair is always a disaster. Then you are stuck spending double or triple the amount of money with your hairstylist trying to correct this mistake. Save your bank account and seek professional help – a licensed hairstylist.
Skipping Sunscreen – I can’t stress enough how important it is to protect your skin from the sun. Dermatologists recommend a minimum SPF 30 of daily sun protection. If you use SPF 30 or higher it will block up to 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. If you aren’t keen on wearing moisturizer with sunscreen in it there are several brands of foundation that have SPF built right in. One of the many reasons my Dior Forever Perfect Foundation is one of my absolute favorites is that it has SPF 35. It’s seamless matte coverage also gives up to 16 hours of wear. Also it makes your face smell like Dior perfume. At $64.00 it is definitely a splurge but with this product you definitely get what you pay for. Another makeup artist cult favorite is the MAC Studio Waterweight Foundation. This oil controlling lightweight foundation has SPF 30. More reasonably priced at only $35.00 it offers medium coverage and long wear. Over exposure to the sun can also cause sunspots. These pesky brown spots are broken blood vessels due to over exposure of the sun. More often than not these spots are just a nuisance but it’s important to protect your skin because these spots can be a warning sign of skin cancer.
Not Getting Sleep – they call it beauty sleep for a reason. The average adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep to function properly during the day. Too much or too little sleep can be detrimental to your health. Oversleeping can put you at a higher risk for diabetes and heart disease. Too Little sleep causes wrinkles and dark circles. In extreme cases it can also cause extreme high blood pressure, depression, stress, anxiety, weight gain and a lower sex drive.
Using Expired Makeup – expired makeup contains a cesspool of bacteria which is the optimal environment for an infection to occur. Each makeup product has an expiry date for a reason. Old product doesn’t preform as well as fresh product. Mascara should be thrown out every 3 months. Liquid liners are good for up to 6 months. Foundation, lip gloss and mascara you can use up to 1 year. With lipstick, powders, eye shadows, broker or blush don’t worry about tossing them for 2 years.
Not Following a Proper Skincare Regimen – If you are not following a daily skincare regimen there’s no better time to start. The first step is to find out what skin type you are: normal, dry, oily, combination or sensitive. Then as a starting point you want to cover cleansing, toning and moisturizing. So basically washing your face, balancing your pH and hydrating your skin As a bare minimum. dermatologists recommend a facial every 4 weeks but even I admit I cannot find the time once a month to make it to see the aesthetician. If I’m really on top of my skincare I’m realistically getting a facial every 3-4 months. In between appointments I recommend using a face mask once a week or as needed and I give myself an at home facial once a month with my Clairsonic. It is so important start these good habits when you are young because preventative care is much easier then corrective care when it comes to skin.
Not Exercising Regularly – your physical and mental health are also greatly tied to your overall well-being. Daily exercise releases endorphins in the brain literally making you a happier and more beautiful human. Less stress means less wrinkles. The side effect of not exercising daily include: weight gain, higher risk of osteoporosis muscle and bones weaken over time, lower Self esteem , depression, and isolation.
In 2018 let’s resolve to put ourselves first for a change. This year I invested a lot of money in my education. My goal is to always bring you, my clients the most up to date techniques, excellent service and beautiful work. May this year be your best year yet.
